Can It Be?

I did a column titled Amazing Perversions and then, a few weeks later, one titled The Addictive Personality. So there I was, covering sex and drugs.

The latter had more than ten times the number of hits!

Is it possible that, offered a night of pills or porn, today's society would prefer to expand their psyches rather than swell their genitals?

What do you think, Doc?

your next book

Okay maybe I'm in a minority but I think it would be intriguing if you balance it all out in your next book and have one chapter on the bright side and the rest about the "Dark Side."

Hey Steve, I haven't read your columns but those stats are baffling. Probably has to do with the titles. A quick tabulation of the most popular websites and blogs tells us what everyone already knows: porn trumps pills. But some people take pills to ease the pain of not getting enough sex, and plenty of people are addicted to both sex and pills. And so the interwoven tapestry grows. Now you have me intrigued enough to read both your columns. Thanks.

Hey Hans, great idea, love it. Now if only I could find a publisher that agrees. Personally, I would love to write that book as there are some amazing psychological studies on the dark side of humanity buried in dusty academic libraries that deserve the light of day. and if a publisher reading this is interested, you know where to find me.

Hey Farouk, my pleasure. I hope you have fantastic conversations about bizarre oddities all day today.

Fascinating necrophilia stats

I haven't gotten to chapter 8 yet, although NOW I'm looking forward to it.

Having spent much of my professional life around dead people (pathologist, not undertaker), I never understood the whole necrophilia thing. Thanks for clearing that up.

Curiosity is always good. I love to find those weird stats and unusual bits of information. What you chose to do with it, though, often requires a little bit of self control (especially at cocktail parties).

Necrophilia

Interestingly enough, there are now some professional ladies who specialize in playing dead. They just lie there and never move a muscle. How much they charge, I don't know. I can get the same thing at home for free

PS Don't tell my wife I said that.

Perhaps more widespread...

I am thinking of the post-Twilight obsession with vampires and the eroticism they seem to represent. If necrophilia is a matter of degree and not kind, then maybe most people are that way inclined, a little.
