U.S. unemployment is high-9.1%. A healthy economy has an unemployment rate around 4%-6%. While there are many theories as to why our unemployment rate is so high, I'm not an economist or a politician, so I'm not going to debate about the causes. Job Loss = Return to Identity Not Loss of One?
It's strange to me that no one talks about the loss of identity involved in having a job. I remember feeling optimistic and excited when I started my first job search. As soon as I got a job, I realized that my whole self would be squeezed throughout the day into a role, a profile that was less than me - and that my colleagues were going through the same thing. I have never experienced a layoff that did not bring me a sense of great relief and freedom.
