Good Morning America showed a heart wrenching story about a child diagnosed with an eating disorder. She becomes gravely ill and in desperate need of treatment to survive. Her family soon discovers, to their shock and surprise, that intensive treatment for eating disorders is not covered. This clause is buried in the fine print. Thus, all of their savings are depleted to save their daughter's life. Often, people are forced to mortgage their homes, cash out retirement savings or college funds to get the treatment they need for residential care. If you missed the story see www.nationaleatingdisorders.org for a link to the TV clip.
I was so inspired and moved by the story that I want to do something to help this cause outside the walls of my office. So, I've decided to kick off my heels and take a walk. On October 11th, I will be walking in the National Eating Disorder Organization's fundraiser in New York City. It is a walk to raise money for the National Eating Disorder Association. Their goal, among many things, is to raise money for the awareness, prevention and treatment of eating disorders.
