When I first started doing this blog several months ago, one of my first topics was "nanny-bots"--- hypothetical robots built to do child care. An article about this by Noel Sharkey had appeared in the journal Science, and a lot of discussion had ensued. Read More

Hitting the nail on the head
You have really hit the nail on the head here Jean. I particularly like the statement that we know far more about robots than we do about babies.
Unfortunately, to my cost, I have discovered that there are very many people who get angry with me for suggesting that robots are not going to be as smart as humans any time soon. The "believers" hold that robot intelligence will go beyond ours within the next two decades or before.
Of course as a scientist I have to accept that I may be proved wrong but I can find no evidence for the claims. It seems to me to be a dangerous idea that will impact on the artifacts that we build under the delusion of such progress.
The one hope is that if robots do suddenly become smarter than us, the first thing they will do is to outlaw robot childcare. (~;

Robot care
For our own sakes, let's hope they outlaw robot elder-care as well!
