Using Facebook is indeed a great way to establish a relationship with a future mentor. Send a friend request with a brief introduction. If it's accepted, start commenting on this person's wall. Provide insightful, well-thought comments. Maybe send some helpful links. Add value to the person's life. Then, approach the person more directly. If you are local, try to establish a meeting in person. Or simply ask for 30 minutes of their time. It's simple but effective.
