Whenever election time comes along I feel as though a mammoth meat cleaver has split me in two. I'm fascinated by the process and can't get enough news fast enough, and yet I'm depressed by the way candidates talk and the public reacts. This time the appearance of Sarah Palin on the scene really sent me into some kind of fugue state that hardly seems real. Read More

U.S. presidential election
Thank you Thomas for sharing these observations about next Tuesday's election in the U.S. May the next president show wisdom and compassion in office, two features I associate with leadership.
Beautifully said and well
Beautifully said and well received.......
Any gravitas we may have had seemed to go down the drain in recent years, and a major attitude shift could go a long way to help alleviate many of our current problems. Let's hope that the next US leader will be able to inspire all of us to seek wisdom and compassion, and that after the past 8 years the American public can now see how important emotional intelligence is. It's time to play catch-up. Our evolution into a nice, happy world has been a little stunted for obv(W)ious reasons : )

Obama's Gravitas AND Humor
I am so relieved that our new president's name is Barack Obama, as much for his intelligence and poise/dignity as for his gravitas, humor and million dollar smile. The thing that he and and Sarah Palin shared in common (dare I say it) during the campaign was a dynamic presence. But as Colin Powell put it (subtly), Obama has style and substance. I like that he is so well received around the world and he seems to have kept his campaign on the high road. One funny thing I read was in People Magazine. The pilot who landed his plane in the Hudson River was invited to be a special guest at Obama's Inauguration (along with his wife) - and this is the humor part - Obama said to the pilot's spouse "you're not going to let this go to his head, are you?" To which she replied, "I tell people he snores." They all got a good laugh out of it and Obama said, "You're have to tell that to my wife!" - I think he presents a good mix of the gravitas and lightheartedness of which you speak.
