Can Dogs See Colors?

Dogs do see colors--only not the same ones that you do.

See colors? Big deal. Some can also read. See Writing Frontier's "Shocking Dog Tale" at

Yeah!

That's what I'm teaching my dog next. But the dogs see the letters as characters.

Why?

I wonder why dogs have such a limited vision of color. It seems to boggle my mind as to this, because I know we (the human race including animals) have been created (I know some might argue with this fact) but I truely believe that God created everything that we see, eat, and breath. Since He created the many things on earth for our enjoyment- the wonderful taste of food, the dazzling smell of freshly cut flowers, the beautiful awe-inspiring sight of the grassy hill-tops- one might wonder why He created this unique creature with a limited range of seeing color. I guess he probably did it for a reason, just as he purposes everything for a reason, but I will have to do more research into this.

I have aways wanted to know about this ever since I was a child and someone told me that dogs were colorblind, and of course I thought literally. What if they needed this to see better in the dark to hunt? Or what if they couldn't handle seeing the wide-range of colors like we do? These may be some reasons why our creator decided to create these magnificent creatures that way.

Good Question

I actually have a dog -- a hunting dog -- and I don't think they would need to see all of the colors we do. They probably think (if they do think at all--many argue about this) that they have a full spectrum!! But our best buds don't need to see things like stoplights and business signs. They only need to see the green and brown around them. I'm only 11, but I think that dogs serve no purpose of seeing completely. If they did, they would have evolved like that and/or God would have created them like that. Humans are much more complex creatures and strangely need to see all of this. Also, the colors we see and dogs don't are pretty bright. Why would a dog want to see such a bright light hunting? Humans don't particularly like brightness, so why would dogs??? My 5 pets shield from brightness, poor guys and gals.
I hope this answers your questoin!!!

very informative thank you

Hi all, I'd just like to say thank you for the very informative webpage, it is awesome that the web has provided us with a means of indulging our quest for knowledge.
Even more noticeable than anything was Emma's intelligence level for her age and I truly hope her parents realise how valuable and priceless this is.
11 years young and analytical, well spoken/written, and still with a child's perspective.
Even spelling some of what she wrote would trouble some adults!
Fantastic Emma.
Keep going, don't ever stop setting your own levels.
I'd love to hear how you progress with that kind of iq level as it is often difficult for the intelligent ones amongst us to not stand out from the crowd.
