There's An Unlikely Hero In Our Midst

Maria Bamford is a comedian who is speaking out about mental illness.

If you as a mental health professional or a consumer of mental health services read just one article from the New York Times this year, please make it this one.

I read this article from the July 17th issue of the New York Times Magazine this past week and I was blown away by the profile of Maria Bamford. In the article,"The Weird, Scary and Ingenious Brain of Maria Bamford" by Sara Corbett, she describes Ms. Bamford’s work as a comedian whose routine focuses on her struggle with mental illness.

Ms. Bamford doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff. She addresses OCD, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and psych hospitalizations. She funny, charming and irreverent. There’s a video embedded in the NY Times article, but it’s also easy to go to you tube and enter Maria Bamford and an array of clips of her work come up. Everything I’ve watched has been smart, funny and compassionate.

We have an advocate for mental illness in our midst folks. One who is doing the work she loves while also working for the restl of us as well.
