Leslie Sokol

Dr. Sokol, a licensed psychologist, is the Director of Education and one of the principal instructors with the internationally acclaimed Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research in Philadelphia. She has taught cognitive therapy to professional groups, nationally and internationally, on such topics as: depression, anxiety, personality disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse and couples' problems. In addition to her roles at the Beck Institute, she maintains a private practice in a primary care setting in the Philadelphia area. She was also on the teaching faculty of Mercy Suburban Hospital where she has trained family medicine residents for the past 20 years. She also serves as the staff psychologist in the cardiac rehab and physical rehabilitation departments. From 1985 to 1987 she was a Court Appointed Custody Mediator in the state of New Jersey and from 1995 to the present she is a Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Court Appointed Custody Evaluator.

Dr. Sokol, distinguished founding fellow and past President of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, is currently serving as Treasurer and Chairman of its Credentials Committee. In these roles, she was intricately involved in the provision and development of training protocols to insure competency in Cognitive Therapy, and in the testing and utilization of tools to evaluate this competency. To further her mission of spreading accurate knowledge of cognitive therapy worldwide, she was Representative at Large for the IACP (International Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy). She has maintained membership for over twenty-five years in the following professional organizations: Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and American Psychological Association.

Leslie Sokol received her joint Ph.D. (Counseling Psychology/Measurement and Evaluation Techniques in Experimental Research) from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. Her thesis, Cognitive Treatment of Panic Disorder: A Test of Theory, Outcome, and Process, was the first study substantiating the efficacy of cognitive treatment of panic disorder. She's the co-author of Think Confident, Be Confident: A Four-Step Program to Eliminate Doubt and Achieve LifelongSelf-Esteem.
