Ever found yourself stuck in a state of uncertainty? It's a cold, dark place, this Shadow of Doubt, and getting out can be tricky. As those of us with OCD can attest to, there are some very alluring false exits all around you--trapdoors that only take you deeper into The Shadow. Read More

I love the trap door metaphor. I'm going to remind myself of this when I find myself tiptoeing around of them.

What meds work best
I have been taking Prozac, 60 mg for about 10 years now. The first year or two was wonderful. I had a skip in my step and a song on my lips all the time. That has waned and now I am wondering if I should switch to something like Luvox.
On the road again
Hi Jeff.
First, thanks for your book Rewind, Replay, Repeat. It made me feel less alone. I'm really looking forward to reading When in Doubt. Thanks also for this blog.
A big OCD issue for me has been driving. The last time I tried it (4 years ago) was very difficult. I took all sorts of OCD "Trapdoors" and finally just stopped driving. Well, I'm now working with a great therapist and have driven twice. I know that it will be difficult but I'm feeling optimistic.

Accepting OCD
Jeff,
Thanks so much for bringing some light to this complicated disorder and for alleviating some of the isolation that those of us who have OCD feel as we learn to live with it.
It's taken a long time, but one of the things that's helped me a great deal is to recognize that any time I'm "what-iffing" that's the "Doubt Bully--or fear. I've learned that I have to accept its presence in my life, but that I have a choice about whether I listen to it and/or act on it. I can re-attribute the "what-ifs" to the OCD--a biophysical problem with my brain--and not feel as though I'm just a freaked out wienie.
I highly recommend dialectical behavioral therapy for OCD, as it helps with acceptance, rather than places the emphasis on changing thoughts--which was exhausting for me. And, BTW, the techniques I learned in therapy didn't work for me until I got some of the chemistry lined up properly with 30 mg of Celexa daily.
It is a lot of work but it's worth it. Everyone gets some amount of crap in life. We don't get to choose that. But we get to choose what to do with it.
