Exploring the common minds and emotions of people and other animals and their lives together

Witness to Heaven’s Hands

One day, a few months past, I sat in the clinic waiting room. A woman emerged from the back, bent over, a friend’s protective arm wrapped around her shoulders. Her face was pressed into the folds of her jacket that muffled her weeping. Read More

Love warriors

Dear Gay,

I am sorry for your loss. You have honored your beloved cat beautifully with this piece. Like you, I recently lost a beloved little cat. I always thought of her as "special needs," and occasionally pondered how fortunate it was that she did not need to earn a living. My mother used to make biscuits using a small, round glass to form them into perfect circles. Not wanting to waste, she pressed the last little scraps of dough into one last patchwork biscuit that was far from perfectly formed. My little kitty reminded me of that last biscuit, as though there were just enough DNA left to make one more kitten, and she never lost her kitten face. Only during the last year of her life (16) was she able to become the lap cat she had always wanted to be. Fortunately for both of us, her final week coincided with my spring break. All of my plans were suddenly cast aside and I became a full-time lap. She slept on me all night every night that last week, and I did not change positions in order to keep her as comfortable as possible. The memory of her tiny little silhouette sitting on my lap, taking comfort from her human, offering comfort to her human, will remain a precious one. What extraordinary creatures they are! What courageous, loving role models they are if we take the time to learn from them.
