These are erections that occur during sleep but are so painful that they wake the man up. This problem has not been well-studied and may occur more often than is reported. The pain is frequently too severe to simply "shake off" and can result in a serious loss of sleep.

SRPEs seem to occur during REM sleep, just like non-painful sleeping erections.
