Who says you need to be
Who says you need to be competitive to get good grades and do well on standardized tests (the things required to get into college). Can't you just be striving for personal achievement?
Competition is not really a factor in school achievement anymore. Especially considering that few schools adjust grades on a curve (and instead give everyone 'B's).
Athletics, however, require competition. as such it is a better example of competition than academics.

Are you kidding me? If, while in high school, you took any classes with anyone in the top ten, then you would realize just the level of competition there really is in academics. Trust me its cutthroat. It's all about personal achievement alright. So long as your personal achievement is "more, higher, better" than your peers.
