At the recent meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife (CITES), far too many animals got the short end of the stick. Marine animals were the hardest hit. According to world-renowned scientist Sylvia Earle and others, while the situation is dire, it is not too late to save the decline of many species but time is not on our side. But we're going to have to do far more immediately to better the situation because we humans are all over the place and a rather self-centered, short-sighted, and arrogant lot. We need to use our big-brains in more constructive ways and expand our compassion footprint to all animals, including those who live beneath the surface out of direct sight.
