For my first entry, I thought I would write a little about why I decided to post at Psychology Today. Six months after graduating college, I was certain I wanted to attend graduate school. When I began seeking information about programs and careers in Psychology, I received conflicting reports, varied opinions, and outdated statistics. It was difficult to arrive at a consensus regarding the surfeit of often flawed information. Consulting with a professor I knew well, he warned that many students spend more deliberation over the purchase of a car than they do choosing a graduate program. This seemingly incongruous response is true; often students will choose a course of study based on a whim or superfical appreciation of the subject. Graduate school is a serious investment and sincere commitment. It is hearbreaking for someone to matricualte and THEN determine that she/he is not suited for a chosen discipline.
I hope to write about my experience in a PhD Counseling Psychology program. I've been inside and hope to share some trade secrets for prospective graduate students considering a career in Psychology. Like most fields things change quickly as new trends assume dominance and old trends fall from favor. I hope to provide a resource that is timely, informative, and beyond everything else, honest. I will update soon and begin my blog proper.
