About Against All Odds

A decade ago, my husband and I adopted an 8-month-old baby from Siberia. She was healthy and progressed quickly but she wouldn't bond. As a new mother, in her forties, I thought something was wrong with me. Eventually enough clues led me to discover that Julia was suffering from Reactive Attachment Disorder, which affects young children who have been neglected and abused, including many who've started their young lives in orphanages. This column will chronicle what it's been like to turn our daughter's life around, and what we continue to do to help her thrive.
