Cutters spring immediately to mind, since cutting is one of the prevalent ways the body and mind get transposed. While I don't suffer the symptomology of actual self-injury, anxiety, guilt, or any extreme emotion constantly produces the urge to cut or dig into my skin. The metaphor happens to be fairly simple--there is "too much" inside and blood-letting seems to be the perfect way of "getting it out." I try to refrain from the mental exercies of imagining my self-injury, but as it is, just imagining the act of cutting releases me to be able to fully examine what or why I feel. It's as if the horror of thinking of cutting forces me to focus on the stimulus in such a way that I can think things thru.
