A judge in Malawi has blocked Madonna from adopting.
In an interview on BBC radio* Ms. Jane Moyo, of the British Aid agency ActionAid suggests that the superstar's moral obligation going forward is to provide financial support for the child. She cites this because all the parties' names were--for some reason--made public. That the little girl will have an awareness of what life might have been like for her. The reality that she had been denied a ticket into the lap of luxury could make her resentful later on.
These are valid points--but what should be done and how to proceed in the long-term best interests of the child?
Putting aside for a moment that Madonna may appeal the decision, my mind rushed to form an opinion. Madonna has the money--so why not give?--in addition to the charity work she does. But this raises other questions. Who will manage the money? What will happen to that child, still living in her community, when others see her advantage? How much money is enough?
