Addiction—the thematic malady for our society—entails every type of psychological and societal problem.

What Makes Tiger Tick: Sex Addict or Skilled Gamer?

While people may see Tiger's excessive sexual activity as proving that he is a sex addict, his sexual persona is actually the translation into the bedroom of the skillful, even imaginative, approach he takes towards golf. Read More

Tiger ain't gone crazy

As Chris Rock said of the tiger that attacked his trainer in Las Vegas, "That tiger ain't gone crazy; that tiger went tiger!"

Not that the amount of cash

Not that the amount of cash that he owns has anything to do with the number of women willing to jump in the sack with him. Right?

Some of them do mention the

nice hotel suites he gets - but then he doesn't take them out anywhere! Mindy Lawton, the Florida waitress who makes @ $25gs a year, said she loved his home, but "He did not buy me anything, not even a meal." Tiger's a cheap skate! (Although he may be paying for his playing now.)

I think Tiger is sick

But only Tiger himself can decide ....

Is everyone who has as many sex partners as Tiger

sick?

Uh, I hate to write this but

Uh, I hate to write this but "DUH! Tiger is sick!". It's not the number of sex partners he's had, it's how/who/when. He's chasing prostitutes while his wife is pregnant all while trying to hide it. He's definitely sick, but it's not sex addiction - it's extremely low self esteem acted out through his sexual pursuits.

I love disease discussions!

They're so imaginative, so flexible! Explain to me how the his disease made him (a) make each woman feel like he was about to leave his wife because he cared for them so much, (b) make sure he never spent a cent on any of them - except to fly them to where he could screw them, (c) never paid any attention to them unless he was screwing them, (d) hide the local woman in his house because he couldn't be seen with a date near his home - while he partied with the others. What a diabolic disease! What a cagey, cunning illness - not like they say about alcoholism, where the booze sneaks up on the person, but in his callous, self-serving treatment of multiple women he used for his own pleasure. Now that's a disease!

Mental illness as in low self

Mental illness as in low self esteem, depression, searching for the love he never received as a child causes aberrant behavior (drug addiction, alcoholism, affairs, murder or whatever). Note the women he's pursued have the same sorts of esteem issues, seeking attention and affection and apparently have serious relationship issues and a real desire to screw for $ in lieu of an actual relationship. That's why they allowed themselves to be treated with so little attention and respect. Plus, the delusion that "maybe someday he'll really love me and take me away to his castle to live happily ever after". The affairs he's having are just the symptoms, not the actual disease.

Tiger

Exploitation of women? Please these women are making choices, they exploit themselves thats all. The guy is one of the most famous in the world, every woman knows he is married so what are these women expecting?!!! The only woman being exploited is Tigers wife. I have no respect or sympathy for that man or those women.

Tiger Made to Act Like a Dope Probably Because he Was Born with

I just wrote a blog post on this. It is likely Tiger was born with a shortage of a certain kind of dopamine receptors.

http://www.scientificblogging.com/mom039s_perspective/blog/tiger_made_ac...

Now, like many addictions, framing it as a cool thing is a much easier way to make sense of it. It is funny to see a guy making a list of admirable attributes and benefits of something that has ruined his life and that of those close to him! His career as a spokesperson is over.

Even the multiple young women found his behavior creepy. Many addictions are often characterized as macho and cool. Usually by the addict and fellow addicts.

Cheers

Shortage of dopamine receptors -

I KNEW that was why Tiger screwed all those women! And he was able to convince them he would leave his wife because they were receptive dopes.

Physics

It's just plain inferiority

It's just plain inferiority complex. He grew up with much racial discrimination and bigotry, as did his father. He doesn't fit in anywhere and he's trying desperately to show his superiority through golf and sex. I feel very sorry for him as he'll never know true love as he's thrown away any chance of that with his current wife. No amount of money will buy Tiger true happiness or peace in his life.

Any Stress Triggers Addictive "Externalizing" Behavior

You're right. Any life experience that causes a person with a brain disorder will trigger the self-hurting behavior.

Mainly because they don't have the normal amount of dopamine receptors that allow most of use to sooth ourselves with ONE drink, or a movie, or hitting a bucket of balls, or reading a book. Maybe kicking the cat! Just kidding.

If you're brain starts in the hole with those natural soothing mechanisms, then you literally have to reach out and search for external things that will trigger dopamine - fast.

We haven't talked about testosterone, but if you're a type-a, hi-testosterone guy: girls, cars, money, risky behavior is going to squirt dopamine stat!

It's pretty mechanical.

You're an idiot

You're so obtuse and cocksure you don't even seem aware how divergent your views are with those expressed in this post.

I'm sorry - that outburst is completely inappropriate at a psychology Web site.

Let me reframe that. Your poor cognitive coping and capacity for complexity lead you to reduce things to a mechanical model that bear no resemblance to human reality.

If I were more mechanistic, I would posit (a) that your brain is impoverished (I imagine a skeletal structure, like some bombed-out WWII relic), (b) that you are yourself "sick" - at least one whose views actually encourage those you influence to mental instability.

Oh, God - what have I written? I apologize, a thousand times over. Please, proceed with your delusions. I have no right to challenge them - for all I know, you're a high-level administrator at the National Institute on Drug Abuse!

A Ferrari With a Broken Steering Mechanism

The author is right. All those skills and IQ are almost superhuman. It's just when they are "steered" by a broken brain. Yikes! It's why "smart" people, including on Wall St., can't outsmart an addiction and broken brain.

To bad.

Well, not quite right.

I'm sorry you missed the point of my post - it's not that he's a talented man with good values whose addiction ran him aground; it's that his faulty values and preoccupations - which worked for him to become a golf champion - caused him to fail as a human being in the realm of intimacy.

I believe he has lacked for

I believe he has lacked for love all his life and is desperately trying to find some somewhere - being loved for his golf or the flings with those who'll love him for the brief moment of paid-for sex. His father was obsessed with making him "Tiger" I it seems Tiger could only see the award of affection through the achievements of golf. It's not some sort of "focus" or "athletic prowess" that applies, it's an empty feeling he's gotten from his upbringing. It was very apparent that Earl and Tilda were never very close spouses.

tiger

Got news for u guys:Tiger would still get plenty of women if he were Tiger the bus driver. With that body? That walk? The money/fame just made it easier.
