People respond to a threat
I think the main force behind vilifying others is that many of us are discomforted, even afraid of, others that don't support our view. Perhaps it threatens the beliefs we have invested in ourselves for so many years.
I mean, what might happen to us if we are proved wrong? There's room in the world for various beliefs, and ways of looking at things. The folks who are most reactive about that may be the type to be concerned about.
