A popular TV segment shows misbehaving children being escorted to a prison, where inmates and/or prison guards scream at them. Returning to the studio, the kids vow to behave better. As well as comprising child abuse in itself, such programs have uniformly been shown to have negative effects, leading to more delinquency and violence in their aftermath. Read More

Child Abuse
Mr. Peele, thank you for writing this post.
It's pretty sad that child abuse has now become
entertainment. It would be good if those
involved were charged with child abuse, but
considering the number of "boot camps" that
use similar techniques, I wouldn't hold my
breath.
What's even more sad is the thought that so

After reading this column, I completely changed my logic behind shows like Steve's and Maury's in dealing with out of control kids. One child's problem is the whole family's problem. Embarrassing the child in front of national TV by the form of a "wake up call" probably won't help in the long run. They should offer the whole family therapy instead of focusing on TV ratings.

Nice article. Thanks for saying to us that abusing kids happens in national TV. Its not good it can cause trauma to the child.

thanks. i watched an episode and i was horrified at the stupidity of all the adults. Those episodes just reinforce the feelings that a child should feel horrible about oneself and so they will sink into the self fulfilling prophecy - of there's just something wrong with me- something really bad. or it works and instead of a criminal we have another weak depressed adult who might kill himself or live his entire life settling for a shitty unfulfilling life (the slow suicide because usually this person takes care of their body so badly that they die prematurely).
