Today is the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition (yes, I'm drinking a cocktail right now). In case you'd forgotten, starting in 1920 and for thirteen years following, it was illegal to manufacture or sell beverage alcohol in the United States. After a decade or so of bootlegger crime and a few years of economic depression, on December 5th, 1933, Prohibition was repealed. Here are the top five things we learned about ourselves from the Prohibition experience. Read More

The good that came out of Prohibition
Prohibition is a fascinating chapter in American
history, I do think though that a couple of good things
did come out of it.
1. Prohibition is now (or should be) completely
discredited as an effective way to fight addiction.
Other countries were able to reduce alcohol consumption
using other methods without the many bad effects
of prohibition.

2. Prohibition came about because of the temperance movement.
And the temperance movement was one of the first opportunity
for women to be active and involved politically
on a mass scale. The lessons they learned from
helping to pass prohibition were invaluable for
other progressive movements, such as the women's movement.

Agreed
I agree with Terry that Prohibition is now (or should be) completely discredited as an effective way to fight addiction.Other countries were able to reduce alcohol consumption using other methods without the many bad effects of prohibition. It is jsut like the ways the Europeans use horrific commercials to degrade the issue to drug driving and it is seen to be working over there unlike in the US. The police do a great job enforcing it, but if people saw the affects of it they wouldnt do it. I also feel lowering the drinking age would also help even though I am of age. I feel people would have a lot more respect and knowledge about drinking if this ever happened her in the US.
