One reason we don't know people drink regularly or take drugs while leading normal - even distinguished - lives is because they are not allowed to tell us. After his first autobiography, Giant Steps (1983) was criticized for describing his collegiate drug use, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote a second autobiography, Kareem (1990), which didn't mention drugs. Excellent Post
Thanks for another excellent post. You can add Carl Sagan to your list of frequent marijuana smokers who felt they had to keep it on the down low. To his credit, Nobel winner Cary Mullis openly states in his autobiography that his big idea would never have come to him without the help of hallucinogens (non-toxic, non-addictive substances that can get you more jail time than second-degree murder).
Daily use of alcohol is a non-issue in many Mediterranean countries, as you know. As in Newman's case, it doesn't seem to be much of a health problem because it's done in moderation.
Paul Newman's love of beer
Some people get crazy about wine, PL was a connoisseur of Beer. He was by no means an alcoholic. A local Italian deli in town made sure there was always a case of a particular brand on hand. In the summers, PL was known to drive around town with the top down on his Porsche powered VW sporting a beer can opener tied to a string around his neck.
He was a great guy who treated everyone as he would like to be treated. We all honored that. Occasionally some tourist would get in his face and ask him to remove the sunglasses but he would always politely decline. He will be sorely missed.
Just Say No To Just Say No
Great article with much food for thought. I was particularly taken by your point that "The prevailing prevention approach is to tell everyone not to do these things".
As a child growing up in the 1980's I vividly remember the "Just Say No" campaign, this over simplistic and inadequate social inoculation strategy didn't work then and it certainly doesn't work now.
Give me a break.
Allow me to depart from the high-brow, pretentious, and ego-massaging nature of the "article" and the comments.
You're obviously unacquainted with the history of beer drinking, alcoholism, and life in general.
Please, less scholastic posturing, and more attention to the human condition.
Geez, could you be any more pin headed?
More about Paul Newman
Uh, yeah, Paul drank a little. A lot. A hella lot. I wrote about it here: http://thecartoons.net/2009/03/19/i-only-use-paul-newmans-legendary-sala...
More has been written
about Newman's beer-drinking since his death, and it makes him look less attractive (including,in a mild way, Donna Barstow's post accompanying her cartoon mentioning Newman). But, of course, he will always be an icon.
Donna, you might look at my "Kennedy Sex Escapades" post, for further inspiration:http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/addiction-in-society/200805/reckless-sex-and-power-iii-the-top-seven-kennedy-sex-scandals
