MS in the Stars?

In the northern hemisphere, those born in May have an increased risk of developing multiple sclerosis later in life, while those with a November birthday are the least likely to later suffer from the degenerative disease. The link may be the result of sun exposure or seasonal variations in pregnant women's vitamin D level, which could in turn have an impact on brain development.

Smoke Alert

Whether it's first- or second-hand, cigarette smoke complicates the body's wound healing process at the cellular level. Exposure to smoke delays the formation of healing tissue and increases the risk of scarring at the edges of a wound.

A Stroke of Rage

People who suffer an ischemic stroke (the most common kind, caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, as from a blood clot) are more likely to have experienced anger or other negative emotion just beforehand, in the preceding two hours. And on average, those who felt an angry surge before their stroke considered it a more intense outburst than any they'd had in the previous year.

35%

Percentage of Americans who mention reading as their favorite pastime, according to a recent telephone survey by The Harris Poll's recent telephone survey. Reading is up by 7 points since 1995. TV watching is in second place, with 21% of respondents listing it as their favorite activity. Spending time with families and children comes in third, at 20%.
