Stimulating Strolls: A machine that stimulates abdominal muscles can make regular exercise routines more effective, says a team of British researchers. People who took 30-minute walks five times per week for eight weeks while wearing an electrical muscle-stimulation device wound up with greater abdominal strength and smaller waist and hip measurements than those who walked without the device.

Docs Versus the Web: Patients with illness could actually worsen their condition by relying too much on the Internet for health advice, research suggests. Information on the web may lull some patients into a false sense of security, or may prompt them to make treatment choices that contradict their doctors' orders.

The Alcohol Connection: The more alcohol a woman consumes, the greater her risk of breast cancer, according to a major research review. A woman who drinks no alcohol at all has an 8.8% chance of developing breast cancer before she reaches 80, whereas women who consume two drinks a day raise the odds to 10.1%.

14 million: The number of older adults expected to develop osteoporosis by the year 2020. It's possible to prevent the bone-weakening disease by consuming a diet rich in leafy green vegetables, dairy products and other foods or drinks loaded with calcium and vitamin D. Regular exercise is also important, as is maintaining a healthy weight.
