Advice: A Jealous Fiance

My fiancé has some jealous tendencies. I’m willing to go to counseling, give up every male friend and never speak to another man as long as I live. I was born to help others (especially those who are love-deprived), to bring them around to “love wholeness.” I want to complete him and I don’t want him to have any uncomfortable feelings about me. I guess he will just need to see from my actions that he is the only love for me. I’d do almost anything to please him.

Apparently you have confused the instruction book for love with the instruction book for jigsaw puzzles. Love isn’t about supplying the missing piece to create someone else’s wholeness. Love works only between two more or less complete human beings, and even then it’s not easy.

You also seem to have read too many fairy tales. The undying devotion you imagine yourself delivering is no magic elixir. It evaporates quickly in the presence of dirty dishes and dirty diapers. If there isn’t a balance of power -- with two people feeling they are contributing roughly equally, and getting back roughly equally -- the whole thing unravels. Eventually, you’ll tire of making sacrifices and grow resentful of what feels like slavery, while Mr. Whole will chafe under the burden of too much responsibility for your well-being and feel disdain for you.

Devotion does not cure jealousy, because his jealousy exists independent of you. It doesn’t arise from your behavior but from his doubts about himself. You urgently need to revise your ideas about love. And if you really wish to help the love-deprived, volunteer with homeless children or AIDS victims.
