33%
Percentage of depressed young people who found themselves jobless
within five years, versus 21% of those not suffering from depression.
Down, in other words, is out.
Not Just Cholesterol
Painless inflammation in the bloodstream (say, from gum disease) is
the newest risk factor for heart attacks-and it's twice as dangerous as
high cholesterol levels. The good news is that diet and exercise can
reduce the risk dramatically, as can aspirin and even
cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Beyond the Binge
Withdrawal from heavy drinking is good, but it may permanently
alter the body's metabolism to make it more sodium-sensitive. The salt
sensitivity could lead to higher blood pressure and increased risk of
cardiovascular disease.
Moms Who Massage
Massaging newborns for half an hour at bedtime helps them get on
regular sleep-wake cycles. Here's a technique Israeli researchers find
effective: Touching the infant's head with one hand while lightly
stroking baby's back in a circular motion with the other.
