SIGNIFICANT OTHERS (Book Review)
THE APE-HUMAN CONTINUUM AND THE QUEST FOR HUMAN NATUREBasic Books, $25
Primatologist Craig Stanford believes that, "to understand human nature, you must understand the apes." This is debatable, but Stanford, codirector of the Jane Goodall Research Center in Uganda, shows that there are important parallels between ourselves and our hirsute cousins. He makes his case in a highly readable form, only occasionally bashes psychologists (a common weakness among primatologists) and generally avoids anthropomorphizing. Anyone with an interest in humans or apes will find this book a fascinating read.
