Folklore has it that, in olden times, cats were so attracted to the distinct odor of valerian that they were known to scratch through the labels on apothecary jars containing the root to get to it. These days, people who have trouble sleeping might be just as anxious to get their hands on the root.
A mild sedative, valerian has become a popular herb among insomniacs for its soothing powers. Its roots contain substances called valepotriates and a volatile oil that, in combination, produce a calming effect. Studies show that people taking valerian before bedtime tend to fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly than they usually do.
Valerian may also help ease your nerves; one study of 100 patients found a combination of St. John's Wort and valerian relieved anxiety better than the prescription anti-anxiety drug, valium.
