TEEN VIOLENCE
The recent spread of school violence has the country up in arms
about how to prevent similar tragedies in the future. While there is no
surefire way to know which students will commit crimes like the shootings
in Littleton, Colorado, the American Psychological Association has
compiled nine warning signs that may indicate that a child is likely to
become violent. They are:
o Loss of temper on a daily basis
o Frequent physical fighting
o Significant vandalism or property damage
o Increase in use of drugs or alcohol
o Increase in risk-taking behavior
o Detailed plans to commit acts of violence
o Threatening to hurt others
o Enjoying hurting animals
o Carrying a weapon
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry also has
identified eight factors which may help predict which kids are at risk
for pulling the trigger:
o Previous aggressive or violent behavior
o Being the victim of physical abuse and/or sexual abuse
o Exposure to violence in the home and/or community
o Having a parent who is violent
o Heavy exposure to violence in TV and movies
o Use of drugs and/or alcohol
o Presence of firearms in the home
o Brain damage from head injury
