"We find elevated rates of violent behavior--in particular, fighting and weapon use--among people who have been treated for mental disorders. What does that mean for public safety? The level of risk is comparable to the risk associated with gender and age. So if you want to protect yourself from violence, you would do just as well to avoid men and teenagers as you would people with mental illness."--Bruce Link, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Columbia University, at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
