He may be the drollest TV shrink since Bob Newhart -- and he's got
a morestar-studded appointment book. We're talking about Dr. Katz, the
animated star of Comedy Central's hit show, "Dr. Katz, Professional
Therapist."
The show's creator is Boston-based comedian Jonathan Katz, who has
already picked up a voice-over Emmy for last summer's debut episodes.
This season, has before, his cartoon clientele consist of real-life
comedians, whose club routines and improvisations are worked into the
scripts' therapy sessions.
While the two share a name and receding hairlines, Katz says his
animated alter ego is a bit more sincere: His job calls for that. No one
keeps going to a therapist who giggles."
As if two Jonathan Katzes weren't enough, there's also an actual
Manhattan psychologist named Jonathan Katz, Ph.D. As a public service, we
offer this guide to help keep them straight.
Most Satisfying Accomplishment:
"Assisting substance abusers as they try to turn their lives
around."
"The first time I got paid for helping someone -- who was
probably happier than me to begin with."
Patients:
Range from physicians to Lower East Side punk rockers.
Include comics Rita Rudner, Steven Wright, Kevin Meaney, Emo
Phillips.
Sessions:
Weekdays, by appointment.
Comedy Central, Sunday at 10 p.m. Episodes repeated on
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
