For problem drinkers who wish to curb their drinking without
abstaining entirely, two new programs have established a toehold in the
United States.
Moderation Management was started last December by Audrey Kishline,
a mother of two who nine years ago entered a traditional 28-day treatment
center and graduated to Alcoholics Anonymous. But it left her feeling
demoralized and powerless--and drinking heavier than ever. "The disease
concept furthers the problem of lack of responsibility, because if you do
get drunk, you can blame it on the disease," she says.
The group's structure resembles that of AA, offering meetings,
advice, and anonymity. There's even a multistep regimen--although in
keeping with the moderation theme, there are nine steps rather than
12.
Its charter chapter is in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A second branch has
started in New Hampshire, and six more are in the works.
Those who prefer their moderation with professional counseling can
choose DrinkWise, a Canadian import. The first U.S. branch, set up only
in May, operates under the auspices of the University of Michigan, also
in Ann Arbor.
"Current treatment programs stigmatize drinkers by labeling them as
alcoholics," says program manager Keith Bruhnsen, M.S.W. DrinkWise
eschews labels and higher powers for cognitive and behavior modification
techniques. For example, clients might rehearse strategies for turning
down that third beer at the next Super Bowl party.
