WORKING AT HOME
"Home-based workers are extremely happy--even if they're working a lot of hours and not making very much money. They're satisfied even when the work disrupts family life. Overall, very few plan on leaving their situation. Portrait of a home-based worker:
o lives in rural, rather than urban, areas
o average income: $21,000/men; $7,750/women
o tends to live in traditional families
o owns own home
In addition, home-based businesses make a considerable contribution to a state's economy, close to $1.5 billion in the state of Indiana alone."
Barbara Rowe, Ph.D, of Purdue University, is associate professor of consumer sciences and retailing.
