Orphaned by AIDS

TRAUMATIC CHILDHOOD

The death of a parent is one of the most traumatic experiences a child can suffer. The chart at right shows the number of children, adolescents, and young adults estimated to be orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S., 1993 through 2000. Researchers call it "a social catastrophe of the greatest magnitude."
